Healthcare
We believe that healthcare is a human right. We support a single-payer healthcare system, as citizens are currently burdened and frequently bankrupted by expensive healthcare.
Housing
We believe that housing is a human right. Every person deserves safe housing, and we support the development of a Tenants Bill of Rights to protect renters from predatory practices. We call for the immediate repeal of Utah’s prohibition of state-mandated rent control, and we wish to implement a county-wide rent control. We support initiatives that:
– Use vacant lots and unused properties to develop affordable housing units where feasible.
– Incentivize developers to include long-term, subsidized units in all multi-unit plans.
– Increase social services to assist people experiencing homelessness through private and public grants.
Air Quality & Environment
We believe that water, as well as the air we breathe, are human rights. Without clean water and clean air, we would not have the chance to live happy and healthy lives. We believe that climate change is an existential threat and that we need bold policies to protect our environment. We fully support:
– Major expansions to public transport, especially within our rural communities to connect them to the rest of the state.
– More railroads and trains, especially high-speed rail.
– Electric/green alternative vehicles.
Criminal Justice
We believe that our prison and jail systems should not be for profit and should focus on rehabilitation, such as:
– Making sure these systems are treating prisoners with respect.
– Ending the cash bail system that punishes citizens for not having money for a sudden arrest.
– Education resources and classes being given to incarcerated people to help reintegrate them into society when they have finished their sentence.
Reproductive Justice
We believe that bodily autonomy is the right of every person, and we seek legislation that would guarantee a person’s ability to receive reproductive care. We also support comprehensive sex education and free contraceptives, as well as assistance programs that help women with unwanted pregnancies to choose adoption over abortion.
Jobs/Labor
We support labor unions and the right to engage in collective bargaining. We demand the end of right-to-work laws that force employees to pay for their union representation.
We also support an actual livable minimum wage for Weber County. Data shows that Utah has the 19th highest livable wage without any support programs, which is why we support the minimum wage being increased dramatically to meet the needs of Weber County and Utah as a whole.
Education
We believe that it is the right of every person to receive a quality education that prepares them to function in a global economy and instills the ability to share ideas and relate to an ever-changing world. That is why we support access to affordable, debt-free secondary education for all who seek it.
We also support an increase in educators’ salaries, particularly for K-12 teachers who should not have to use their personal income to educate our youth.
We also support the expansion and funding of early childhood education and full-day kindergarten for all who seek it.
Immigration
We believe in the humane treatment of all immigrants upon entering this country, whether legally or illegally, and we recognize an immigrant’s right to request refugee status, as international law requires.
- We appreciate the value of migrant workers to the U.S. economy and support measures to protect their work status.
- We recognize the status of DACA recipients as established by President Obama.
- We acknowledge that the immigration process often faces barriers and delays rooted in discrimination based on race, and we support immigration reform that would recognize all humans as equal despite race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation or nationality.
Tax Policy
We support a progressive tax plan that unburdens the working class and requires the wealthy to contribute more to the general welfare, We support the elimination of the Social Security benefit deduction cap for the wealthy
Rights of the Disabled
We support state and federal legislation that assists and provides tools for those with disabilities, that they may more equally fare in our competitive world. We also commend businesses that employ and pay fair wages to people with disabilities and encourage others to do so.
Campaign Finance
We support the repeal of Citizens United and the passing of a constitutional amendment preventing Super PACs, We also support the creation of an independent board to determine fair boundaries for voting districts, that congress may respect the will of the people and eliminate gerrymandering, we also support election cybersecurity and the of expansion of vote by mail initiatives that would provide greater access to the ballot box.
